Selena Gomez Shares How Her Split from Justin Bieber Led to a Social Media Hiatus

In a recent interview, Selena Gomez, 31, shared a candid reflection on how her breakup with Justin Bieber, 29, prompted her to prioritize her mental health by taking a hiatus from social media. The multi-talented artist revealed that following the breakup, she needed to distance herself from the online world.

“I had just gotten my heart broken,” Selena disclosed in an interview with Fast Company published on October 3. “I didn’t need to see what everyone was doing,” she added. She went on to explain that social media often contributed to feelings of inadequacy, especially in terms of body image, saying, “Then there were those moments of not feeling positive about how I looked because of what I’d see on Instagram. Wow, I wish my body looked like that.”

Selena and Justin’s relationship, marked by its on-and-off nature, came to an end in 2018. This challenging period coincided with Selena’s diagnosis of bipolar disorder. In her 2022 Apple+ documentary, “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me,” she opened up about her journey, revealing that her breakup with Justin ultimately had a positive impact on her life.

“Everything was so public. I felt haunted by a past relationship that no one wanted to let go of. Then I just moved past it, and I wasn’t afraid anymore,” she shared in the documentary. Selena even described the breakup as “the best thing that ever happened to me.” She acknowledged that she had to navigate a difficult heartbreak but ultimately found liberation in leaving it all behind.

While Selena seldom discusses her tumultuous relationship with Justin in public, her song “Lose You To Love Me,” released in 2019, hinted at the emotions she experienced during their separation. The song includes poignant lyrics like “In two months you replaced us” and “I needed to lose you to love me.” Despite the speculation surrounding the song, Selena clarified in interviews that it wasn’t meant to be hateful but rather a way to express her feelings and find closure.

After her split from Justin, Selena dated The Weeknd for ten months in 2017. Although briefly linked to Drew Taggart of The Chainsmokers earlier this year, it appeared to be a casual romance. Since then, Selena has playfully addressed her single status on social media and even released a song titled “Single Soon.” She has consistently maintained a sense of humor and a positive outlook on her love life while focusing on her personal growth and well-being.
