Ignazio La Russa on Benigni – It’s fair to talk about the Constitution, I too love Article 21

The president of the Senate: I have not seen the comedian in Sanremo

He swears he hasn’t seen it:  I haven’t followed the Festival for a few years. Too long, with singers who are unknown to anyone my age, often the stage for discussions about other things, more or less shared or more or less taken for granted… I am very bored, I confess ». And adds Ignazio La Russa who preferred the zapping between Salernitana-Juventus and the TV series The Last of Us which he likes a lot. However, the president of the Senate does not appear scandalized by “what I have read here and there and what they have told me” regarding Roberto Benigni’s monologue: “Someone claims that he forced the tone a bit, but I don’t know, I haven’t seen it, what can I do about it.

And even less by the presence of Sergio Mattarella at the Ariston: «Indeed, I find it extremely positive that the president went to Sanremo on the day in which the anniversary of the Constitution is remembered: it is a way to be close to the citizens, not to give an image of the plastered and cold charge but rather participatory and popular. They tell me he was relaxed and also amused. I really have no objection. I would compliment him.”

Talking about the Constitution is never wrong, if that is the best place or the speech was the best possible, it’s not up to me to judge. Surely Mattarella has nothing to do with it, who was invited and went and I don’t think he knew in detail everything that would have been said from the stage.

So let’s summarize Benigni’s monologue: it was an all-round defense of the Constitution.

On the first part of the Constitution, that of principles and values, I believe that no one intends to touch anything and it should be rightly celebrated. On the modernization of the second part of the Constitution, however, I recall that Benigni himself voted yes in the referendum on the Renzi reform, which did not pass. Permissible eh, for heaven’s sake, but that was a big change.

Above all, Benigni said that he loves article 21 infinitely, the one on the freedom of expression of thought precisely because it was written after the twenty years of fascism. Does he agree?

“Of course. The first correct criticism of fascism is precisely on this, having coerced and prevented these freedoms. Those that today the Constitution guarantees to all. Indeed, I tell you more. Together with the first, article 21 is also my favorite of the Constitution. And do you know why?’

    Why?

Because unlike Benigni, whom I believe no one has ever prevented from saying what he thought how and when he wanted, we young right-wingers have been forbidden to express ourselves for years and years, in schools, universities, and in the squares. Not only on purely political topics but also on non-dividing issues, from different points of view. We know what censorship is, we had to earn, freedom of expression day after day.

Is freedom also claiming to have a bust of the Duce in your home, given to you by your father, as he did just yesterday? Among others, Calenda also says that he should be thrown out if he is second in charge of the state.

“Let me clarify. I spoke of that bust precisely to demonstrate that there is no connection between one’s political experience and keeping a memory of one’s father, who moreover never intended to “restore” fascism without denying his past. I said it at the commemoration of Tatarella, of whom I was the closest exponent of the then MSI, with Gasparri and the then young Bocchino: Pinuccio was the father of the turn towards a democratic right that was no longer nostalgic, which a European conservative force. He was not inspired by Evola and Gentile, but by Papini and Prezzolini. And I, with him and behind him, have always maintained that this should be the way: to leave nostalgia behind and look forward. What we did.”

So you will remove the bust of Mussolini from your apartment, despite wanting to ban all nostalgia?

“I said that I would keep a bust or picture of Mao Tse-tung in the same way. I hoped and still hope that by explaining it as I did, and that is in relation to my political history with Tatarella, this story that is too often used instrumentally could be closed. And even if the little bust were by now at my sister’s house, that she can keep it without reporting to anyone, I don’t give the Calenda on duty the satisfaction of declaring it.’

In the meantime, there is the risk of another controversy. In, Sanremo there will be the volleyball player Paola Egonu and Salvini already warns: do not go and complain about racism because the Italians are not. What do you think?

«Well, let’s wait for him to speak before making an argument! It is clear that a certain balance is expected from a sportsman of that caliber, even considering that one is a character in a privileged position compared to ordinary people. However, I was very impressed by his words on racism, so much so that I tried through the president of the federation to invite her to the Senate to publicly express solidarity with her, but they told me it would have been better to wait because he wasn’t in Rome. I hope to be able to receive it soon.’

And on the Zelensky case, was it right that he could speak in a video intervention?

He would not have been the first politician to speak in Sanremo, I remember that Gorbachev was also hosted. In any case, it was not nice that the invitation ended up becoming the subject of clashes and controversies. An invitation is made and made public when it is known that the operation is going through, otherwise, it is better not to do so. Perhaps Rai could have acted differently.
