Cyprus decided that Kosovo karate fighters cannot compete under its flag

More than 30 Kosovo karate players were supposed to perform at the European Championship, in which athletes from 48 countries participate.

The government of Cyprus decided that Kosovo karate players cannot compete under their flag at the European Championship for cadets, juniors and junior seniors, after which they withdrew from the championship, Kosovo media reported.

    – We have been accepted in the European Karate Federation and so far we have competed equally with others, but in Cyprus we got into trouble, because the Government of Cyprus told the Cyprus Karate Federation that Kosovo competitors can only perform as representatives of the Kosovo Karate Federation and instead of the flag, in a flag with the inscription “Kosovo Karate Federation” was placed in the hall, and we were told that even the national anthem of Kosovo will not be broadcast if our representatives win the gold medal – said the president of the Kosovo Karate Federation, Avni Gashi.

He stated that he immediately turned to the World and European Karate Federations, but their support was lacking and added that the Executive Committee of the EKF met in Larnaca for this reason, after which he was told that they could not change the decision of the Government of Cyprus and that we could compete only as determined by the Cypriot Federation.

    – Of course, we did not accept that and we do not compete. All of us, including competitors and coaches, were unanimous that we should not perform if we are not treated equally with others – said Gashi.
