Big differences between science and practice in the field of economics

Microeconomics and Macroeconomics are two theoretical and basic courses of economics and related sciences and are among the sub-categories that are the basis of analyzing many economic and social developments of societies.

For this reason, these two subjects are taught in-depth and widely at all university levels of economics, from bachelors to doctorate. In addition, the basics of these two basic sciences are taught in many other academic disciplines.

It can be said that these two scientific branches of economics have the same weight in the economics department of the university and they are offered to students with the same number of units at all academic levels. However, the analysis bases of these two scientific branches have differences.

While microeconomics analyzes the behavior of small consumer and producer units, in macroeconomics, developments in different sectors of the economy are considered and contemplated at the macro level.

However, the analysis basis of these two branches of the economy is different in some cases. In microeconomics, especially in the consumer sector, the initial assumptions are subjective and non-quantitative; But their analysis is done quantitatively using mathematical tools. On the contrary, in macroeconomics, the issues are more objective, tangible, and measurable.

For this reason (mainly) at undergraduate levels for students, understanding and analyzing microeconomic issues is considered somewhat more unfamiliar and subjective and therefore more difficult.

Considering the basic nature of these two branches of economics, it is necessary that these courses are taught by proficient, fluent, and experienced professors at all levels of study in the field of economics so that they become the basis for students’ in-depth understanding and the country’s economic developments based on the foundations The theory of economics should be better analyzed.

It is clear that all scientific theories, including experimental sciences and human sciences, are based on assumptions. For this reason, scientific theories should be exploited by considering the assumptions of the theories. This principle is emphasized more in humanities in general and in economics in particular, as different societies may have different assumptions.

This is why the analyzes of many economics professors and students who do not take into account this important and fundamental issue are sometimes not compatible with the realities of the country.

This inconsistency becomes problematic when this group of inconsistent analyzes becomes the basis for decision-making and allocation of resources by the country’s policymakers and decision-makers.

This has caused the country’s economy to suffer serious losses from the recommendations of this group of economists. Of course, this problem is more in the theoretical foundations of macroeconomics compared to microeconomics, where there is a possibility of different assumptions in the local conditions of countries.

For this reason, teaching these courses to students, especially in Iran, where existing non-economic assumptions are different from the basic assumptions of micro and macroeconomic theories, should be done with more care and consideration.
