    Criticized employees for relaxing and playing on weekends

    The founder of Chinese social media and gaming giant Tencent recently told employees that corruption, laziness, and poor governance had crippled and undermined the company’s operations.

    This was revealed at Ma Huateng’s annual meeting with Tencent employees on December 15. According to Reuters sources, Ma was angry at the meeting and said that a thorough investigation had revealed extensive corruption within the company’s walls. However, he did not elaborate on the type of corruption involved.

    He also harshly criticized the company’s management at the meeting, but the past two years have proved difficult for the company. The tighter regulation of the authorities in China has, among other things, significantly reduced the income of Tencent, which Pony founded in 1998.

    In addition to severely limiting the amount of time Chinese children are allowed to spend playing video games, Chinese authorities have also refused to allow Tencent to release a new video game for more than fifteen months.

    The media criticized Tencent employees for relaxing on weekends and playing, despite the company’s dire situation. According to Fortune, citing Bloomberg and Chinese media, Criticized almost every department of the company.

    He criticized the company’s gaming division for focusing on quantity over quality and said Tencent’s social media division, which operates WeChat among others, is losing out to rivals such as Douyin, a medium run by Bytedance.

    Ma said too much emphasis had been placed on expanding operations instead of working on Tencent’s core operations. It would have cost the company.
