Elliot scored in the comeback as Liverpool went on

Liverpool secured a place in the last 16 of the FA Cup with a 3-1 victory over B-League team Cardiff today. Harvey Elliott scored Liverpool’s third goal in his first game after a long injury.

As expected, it was the locals in Liverpool who ruled the country at the beginning of the game. They created some good chances to take the lead, but the ball did not want to enter and so it was goalless when the whistle blew for halftime.

The second half started with lethargy when Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher broke Mark Harris off the penalty spot as the latter was about to slip through. Cardiff players wanted a red card for the goalkeeper, but he can probably be considered lucky to have escaped with a yellow card.

Diogo Jota struck a 30 meter free-kick home 53 minutes into the match. 3 – 0 for the home team.

Takumi Minamino doubled the home side’s lead in the 68th minute after an assist from newcomer Luis Diaz before Harvey Elliott put Liverpool 3-0 up eight minutes later. Elliott had come on as a substitute after almost an hour of play, but this was his first game since he left the ankle in September last year.

Substitute Rubin Colwill scratched the back of the net for the visitors about ten minutes before the end of the game and there we sat. The final score was 3-1 and Liverpool will meet Norwich in the last 16 at the beginning of March.
