Driving free? Autonomous taxis in San Francisco start accepting ‘test passengers’

Alphabet’s fully autonomous unit, Vaymo is ready to offer a ride to select passengers in San Francisco, the company announced.

Already now, residents can apply to become “Reliable Testers”. In addition to the program invitation, you can use the Vaymo One app to ride in the fleet of Jaguar I-Pace vehicles that Vaymo will have in town.

The company described the program as “research-focused,” designed to help it gather feedback on its driving experience, with an emphasis on gathering information related to accessibility.

“Last week, we started this program with a few selected ones and now we are expanding it to all interested citizens of San Francisco,” the company said.

Much like in Arizona, Vaymo will not allow cars to be driven unattended right away.

The company will have its employees in cars to ensure that its 5th generation Vaymo Driver technology is not lost on the tricky one-way streets and hills of San Francisco.

The company also told Bloomberg that passengers will ride for free.
