    Xi congratulates Rebelo de Sousa on re-election as Portuguese president

    Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday sent a congratulatory message to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on his re-election as President of Portugal.

    In it, he notes that Sino-Portuguese relations have withstood the test of the novel coronavirus pandemic that arose last year.

    The traditional friendship between the two countries has shown new vitality, said Xi, adding that cooperation against this scourge and in public health has made further progress, while practical cooperation continues to give fruitful results.

    Xi said he attaches great importance to the development of Sino-Portuguese relations and remains ready to work with Mr. Rebelo de Sousa to ensure that these bilateral relations experience new achievements and that the two countries and their peoples in profit.

    Xi Jinping hears activity report presented by Hong Kong SAR chief executive

    President Xi Jinping on Wednesday heard an activity report presented via video link by Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) chief executive Carrie Lam on the labor of the Hong Kong SAR government in 2020, its response to COVID-19, and other situations.

    “On major issues such as national security, you have taken a strong stand and assumed your responsibilities, demonstrating your love and a deep sense of responsibility to the motherland and Hong Kong,” Xi told Ms. Lam.

    “The central authorities fully recognize your performance and that of the Hong Kong SAR government in carrying out duties,” Xi said.
