The Reykjavik International Film Festival, RIFF, was launched with pomp and splendor last night. This weekend, diverse and interesting films from most of the festival’s categories will be shown at Bio Paradis and the Nordic House. The director Anna Hildur Hildibrandsdottir’s debut, Hatrid, will be premiered at Bio Paradis tonight and is sold out at that show. Stefania Thors’ debut, Husmaedraskolinn, will be premiered in Bio Paradis tomorrow. Two other pictures that have attracted attention are:
The Fight For Greenland
A film about the youth struggle for Greenland’s independence, directed by Kenneth Sorento. The film considers what the future of Greenland is and whether the country should become a sovereign state. The film follows four young Greenlanders who use fertile ideas in their struggle, including rap music. The film provides a unique insight into the debate about independence, language and identity that takes place in modern Greenland. The film will be shown at the Nordic House at 6 pm tonight, 25 September.
Nott konunganna / Night Of the Kings
The film comes straight from the Venice Film Festival, the oldest and most prestigious festival in the world. The film’s director Philippe Lacote grew up in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, where the film takes place, and its setting is the infamous La Maca prison, where prisoners rule. The Night of the Kings tells the story of a young man who ends up in prison and is assigned the role of narrator. According to La Maca rules, he will not be able to escape his fate but will try what he can by letting the story last until tomorrow. An amazing film that people should not miss, shown in Bíó Paradís tonight, 24. September at 10 p.m.
